Among the strengths of the Tecumseh Centre for Aboriginal Research and Education is establishing collaborative relationships with bi-epistemic Aboriginal communities, university faculty, and First Nation schools across Ontario and Canada.

The Centre for Indigenous Research, Culture, Language and Education (CIRCLE) strives to facilitate the research, and delivery of linguistic and cultural materials of the First Peoples of North America as well as all Canadians. A special focus is on cultural expressions linked with music and language, both for Aboriginal Canadians and other indigenous people.

The Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (CONAHEC) is a not-for-profit membership-based network of approximately 180 institutions of higher education in Canada, the United States and Mexico, as well as a select group of institutions from other parts of the world.

Our Department of Aboriginal Education offers people of Aboriginal descent, as well as people wishing to teach Aboriginal learners, with the opportunity to learn or increase their knowledge of a Native language, and to learn to become a teacher.

 The ISLC brings together students, faculty, staff, and the community to enhance Indigenous education, advance understanding, and support the needs and aspirations of Indigenous communities. Equipped with a unique round-room gathering space, seminar room, counselling areas, ceremonial spaces, student lounge and a kitchen, the Centre will become a “home away from home” for many Indigenous students.

Saskatchewan Polytech has an Indigenous Students' Centre in each of our campus cities. These centres provide support to Indigenous students and helps to ensure that their experience is the best it possibly can be.

Each centre hosts a variety of cultural activities and events, provides a quiet space to study and a number of services including:

• Space to study and socialize
• Computers and kitchens to use
• Cultural, educational and recreational workshops and activities
• Smudging ceremonies
• Soup and bannock lunches

UBC’s Point Grey Campus is located on the traditional and ancestral territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. At UBC events, it is common to acknowledge Musqueam territory.

The University of Winnipeg actively encourages faculty to incorporate Indigenous perspectives and content in their coursework. Study in the area of Indigenous peoples is integrated in several degree programs, including Anthropology, Education, English, History, Political Science, Religion and Culture, and Sociology, and the University offers language courses in Ininew (Cree) and Anishnabemowin (Ojibway), the two most commonly spoken Indigenous languages in Canada.

With 10 percent—roughly 1,600 Aboriginal students on campus—it is clear that TRU is the university of choice for Aboriginal students. Whether upgrading high school courses, or completing a trades or degree program, we focus on student strengths and offer a variety of services to help students succeed in their chosen program. It is our aim to include Aboriginal culture, history and knowledge in curricula, research and classroom activities.

The Aboriginal Education Council (AEC) at Trent University is comprised of Indigenous community members, faculty/staff/students from Trent University and other stakeholders. The AEC ensures that the university engages the Indigenous community in a meaningful way, and that the needs of the community are being met.

The University of Manitoba is engaged in comprehensive efforts to attract and retain more Indigenous students, faculty and staff; to incorporate Indigenous perspectives and knowledge within its program offerings; and to honour First Nations, Métis and Inuit traditions and cultures in its spaces. Integral to achieving this vision is the newly established position of Vice-Provost (Indigenous Engagement). This key leadership position will advance the University’s strong commitment to Indigenous achievement through its learning, discovery and engagement pathways.

THE PROGRAM

The B.A. Major and Minor in First Nations Studies are products of a collaboration between Vancouver Island University and the First Nations of Vancouver Island and Coastal British Columbia. Their purpose is to provide comprehensive, high-quality education respectful of the cultures of Aboriginal peoples, while meeting their diverse needs.

The Centre for Aboriginal Student Services recognizes that many Indigenous nations have longstanding relationships with the territories upon which York University campuses are located that precede the establishment of York University. York University acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat, and the Métis. It is now home to many Indigenous Peoples.
